PELVIC FLOOR YOGA™

Pelvic Floor Yoga™ is a yoga practice that brings awareness to the pelvic floor, understanding the relationship it carries as being a part of the core muscles, and how this area relates to the whole body through breath and movement. For a variety of personal, cultural, and social reasons, the pelvis and the pelvic floor can be mysterious. At its simplest, the pelvic floor helps us go to the bathroom, plays a key role in sexual function and pleasure, can create core stability, and helps hold internal reproductive organs as well as the bladder and rectum in place.

Range of movement is an indicator of muscle and joint health, and the pelvis is no exception. Just like any other group of muscles, we want to be able to contract and fully release the muscles that weave through our pelvis. Pelvic Floor Yoga™ , created by Leslie Howard, is a practice that can help a practitioner strengthen and tone the pelvic floor when needed, as well as create length and space when there is tension.

As a certified Pelvic Floor Yoga™ teacher, I have supported folks with such issues as incontinence, pain in the pelvis or low back, genital pain, and other ailments. This work includes breath awareness and practices, as well as yoga postures to bring more understanding and connection to this part of one’s body. Developing a deeper understanding of how the body breathes can address conscious and subconscious breathing tendencies that may be contributing to unease in that area.

Pelvic Floor Yoga™ can be an amazing way to support a body growing a baby, prepare for birth and reconnect and rebuild strength in the postpartum time. It is for all people, all genders, and can be an empowering practice to connect to this area of the body that holds so much wisdom and power.
